Malaysian Muslim people - please help?

Can you tell me the basis of the belief that you cannot touch a dogs nose or a wet dog, or that you cannot live with a dog. I know the teachings from Hadith drives (what is to me) this strange superstition/interpretation, but I need to understand why so many Muslem people act upon it. Please be as specific as you can.
